Ashby Becomes Chair as Marcello Passes Gavel – At the Annual Membership Meeting during LeadingAge Florida’s 52nd Annual Convention and Exposition, the chair’s gavel was passed from Diane Marcello of Sunnyside Village to Josh Ashby of Fleet Landing. Marcello will serve as immediate past chair on the Board of Directors. Ashby, CEO of Fleet Landing, Atlantic Beach, officially became Chair of LeadingAge Florida’s Board of Trustees at the end of the Annual Convention.
Ashby holds a B.S.H. in Health Care Administration from the University of North Florida as well as an M.B.A. degree. He previously served as Fleet Landing’s Director of Health Care Services from 2005 until 2009 and then served as Chief Operating Officer before becoming Chief Executive Officer in 2010.
Josh is also a member of the University of North Florida Brooks College of Health Dean’s Advisory Council. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the World Affairs Council of Jacksonville and is an active Rotarian. Ashby and the elected officers become members of the Board of Trustees Executive Committee.

LeadingAge Florida’s 52nd Annual Convention and Exposition Sparkled – LeadingAge Florida’s 52nd Annual Convention and Exposition was a great success due to our sponsors, attendees, exhibitors and speakers.
Michelle Capogrosso, Executive Director of The Springs at South Biscayne, was a first time attendee at Convention. She told us, “I thought that the education component was very good and I particularly enjoyed the leadership session on Wednesday afternoon both 1 and 2 that was titled Making Beautiful Music Together. The classroom sizes were good and air temp was comfortable. I enjoyed the keynote speakers and the American Birthday bash was excellent. I am glad I came and will register again and again.”
Chris Newport, Executive Director at Sinai Residences, also a first time attendee shared his experience by saying, “As a first time at attendee to the LeadingAge Florida convention, I found the convention as a whole was a very well ran event. They keynote speakers were great and the vendor show was very well attended. I thought the convention was run very smooth and every detail was covered. I will be back next year!!!”
Capping off the convention was a fun-filled Birthday Celebration for America which featured good food, music, dancing, Uncle Sam and three of America’s founding fathers.

Golf Tournament Raises Funds for Scholarships – Congratulations to the winners of the golf tournament held at Celebration Golf Club in Kissimmee during LeadingAge Florida’s 52nd Annual Convention and Exposition. All proceeds from the Golf Tournament will be donated to LeadingAge Florida’s Scott Boord Career Development Scholarship Fund. The fund supports LeadingAge Florida member employees seeking to further their education by attending LeadingAge Florida or LeadingAge meetings.

Top 10 Nursing Home & ALF Deficiencies Discussed at Convention - Polly A. Weaver, Assistant Deputy Secretary for the Agency for Health Care Administration– HQA and State Survey Agency Director, was one of many outstanding speakers at the LeadingAge Florida Annual Convention & Exposition held last week. Ms. Weaver discussed the 10 most frequently cited deficiencies for nursing homes and assisted living facilities from January 1, 2014 through December 31, 2014 as well as related survey concerns for each. Please review this important information for preparation of your next survey.
Ms. Weaver shared strategies to improve dementia care. She related that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is focusing their efforts in this area through the reduction of the use of antipsychotic medication in long-stay nursing home patients.
The presentation also covered discussion around the readmissions to hospitals of nursing home patients. CMS has a goal to reduce 2019 readmission rates by 20%. Ms. Weaver identified the four main causes for hospital readmissions:
1. Lack of effective communication
2. Medication related issues
3. Lack of resources
4. Discharge processes
In concluding her remarks, Ms. Weaver reviewed the impact that the role Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) can have on improved resident outcomes.

Are You Renewal Ready?- The Florida Department of Health will verify your continuing education records when you renew your professional license. It is important that you report your continuing education requirements prior to your license renewal. You are invited to join live webinars hosted by the Department of Health, Division of Medical Quality Assurance, to better understand this change.
The webinars are not mandatory. This is simply a tool we are using to help reach licensees that may need assistance with creating their CE accounts in the tracking system. During the webinar participants will see a demonstration of the continuing education tracking system, including how to create a Free Basic Account, view your course history and report continuing education. You will also see an overview of the Department of Health’s website.
Webinars are approximately 30 minutes and are Eastern Standard Time. Participants will be able to ask questions at the end of the presentation.

Apply Now for the LeadingAge Innovations Fund - The LeadingAge Innovations Fund is designed to encourage innovation among our members to develop programs that have the potential for demonstrable impact on residents, clients, families, employees or the broader community and have the potential for replication.
The fund will award up to three awards across two categories:
Innovative Dementia Care Programs - Projects in this category should pursue promising strategies for improving the quality of life and quality of care for people with dementia. Project may include non-pharmacological pilot interventions or staff training programs.
Addressing Wellness Programming Affordable Senior Housing Settings - Projects in this category should address the mental, emotional, physical, spiritual, etc. needs of residents living in affordable senior housing settings.
The Innovations Fund is made possible through the generosity of LeadingAge members, LeadingAge state associations, and individuals.
The online application is now available to provider members of LeadingAge. Applications are due on or before July 31, 2015.
