Florida Presbyterian Homes Turns 60Florida Presbyterian Homes turned 60 this week, and leaders and residents celebrated the milestone with tours, a tribute, and a visit from Rep. Colleen Burton.

Nestled along the shores of Lake Hunter in Lakeland, the 48-acre CCRC was founded in 1955 by the Westminster Presbyterian Church. Today, Florida Presbyterian Homes serves approximately 300 seniors in its neighborhood community.

That community was on display Tuesday, when Rep. Burton, and Rachel Barnes, Chief Legislative Assistant for Sen. Kelli Stargel, took a tour and joined residents for cake and punch in celebration of the diamond anniversary.

During the celebration, Rep. Burton read a tribute that highlighted Florida Presbyterian’s commitment to serving elders through lifelong learning, the arts, ecumenical worship, and health and wellness. Executive Director John Hehn received the framed tribute.

The Chateau at Moorings Park Recognized for Excellence in Long-Term Care – Last week, the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) acknowledged nine Florida nursing homes with a Governor’s Gold Seal Award, which recognizes long-term care facilities that deliver consistently excellent quality of care to their residents. We are proud to report that LeadingAge Florida member, The Chateau at Mooring Park in Naples, was one of the nine Florida nursing homes recognized as a recipient.

“When a family makes the tough decision to place a loved one in a nursing home or long-term care facility, they need to know that they will receive quality care and be treated with dignity and respect they deserve,” said Secretary Liz Dudek. “I want to thank all Gold Seal recipients for the great work they do in putting the health, welfare and safety of their residents first and giving families the peace of mind that their loved ones are getting quality care”.

Of the 682 licensed nursing homes in Florida, 26 nursing homes currently hold the Gold Seal Award. Below is a list of our members who currently hold the Gold Seal designation:

Member Data Collection Survey Final Deadline September 11 – LeadingAge Florida community members were emailed Data Verification Surveys in mid-August. These data surveys are used to update and correct the information we have on each community in our database. To ensure your information is accurately reflected on your 2016 dues notice and in the 2016 Membership Directory, please return the survey by September 11.

More importantly, the revenue information you report will be used to determine a millage calculation for your membership dues for 2016. Your organization’s revenue is the figure reported on your latest IRS 990 Form, Line 9. Your most recent year of revenue is a critical component of your dues calculation, so please return the form by September 11.

If you have any questions regarding the data collection, please contact Jean Krier, Director of Membership and Communications. We value your membership and look forward to continuing to serve you and your communities.

National Falls Prevention Awareness Day – The first day of fall, September 23, marks the 8th annual National Falls Prevention Awareness Day, sponsored by the National Council on Aging (NCOA). Falls are the leading cause of injury-related emergency department visits for older adults, the major cause of hip fractures, and responsible for more than half of fatal head injuries. Numerous states and countries worldwide are now coalescing to address this growing public health issue; many are working closely with occupational therapy practitioners as key contributors to reducing falls.

This year's theme, Take A Stand to Prevent Falls, seeks to unite professionals, older adults, caregivers, and family members to play a part in raising awareness and preventing falls in the older adult population. Since Falls Prevention Awareness Day was first observed in 2008, participation in the event has grown from 11 states to 48 states and the District of Columbia. Organizations hope to expand their reach even further this year.

For more information on Falls Prevention Awareness Day or for a list of ideas to educate your community, please visit the NCOA website.
